Demand for electricity rarely lines up with the ability to generate it. The sun shines and the wind blows at the whim of the weather. Consumers' peak power usage has to be met regardless of the conditions, which means building enough capacity to meet those peaks.
For much of the time that capacity is curtailed, it lies idle waiting for the demand. Solar panels are switched off, wind turbines feathered. Sometimes generation is curtailed not by demand but by transmission capacity.
Zero Host fills in those gaps. When there is the ability to make power, but no demand for it, we use the excess to power flexible compute workloads, from AI inference to cryptocurrency mining, whichever delivers the most value at the time.

Our custom regulation of compute hardware allows power generation developers full control of how much power goes to the Zero Host equipment and how much to other customers.
We’re also exploring how pairing with on-site battery storage can extend our flexibility further, combining fast-response buffering with the longer-duration flexibility our compute workloads provide.

Zero Host uses power from tidal and wind turbines to provide one of the greenest possible solutions for data hosting. By drawing on Europe’s largest deployment of Vanadium flow cell batteries and intelligent load management, our servers match compute demand to the available generation. Our compute platform is expanding beyond cryptocurrency mining into AI processing, federated learning and archival storage — flexible demand that can absorb surplus power and also help balance the grid at peak times. We are developing this model at Eday, Orkney, as part of a wider vision for distributed, renewable-co-located compute nodes across the UK. While other data centres use "green electricity" often certified through carbon offsets, Zero Host is on-site with generation through tidal and wind turbines.
